Great photos in those links!!

When you removed the snap ring to replace the toasty bearing, did you need a puller of some sort?

I'm thinking at 175k trouble free miles I should at least replace the bearing?

Probably not a bad idea Leo. Once you get the snap ring out of there it just comes off. Mine did not give any indication it was going bad until it overheated. The bearing had only a little over half of the ball bearing in it, I still don't know how it didn't freeze up and strand me.

I've replaced the water pump, the vacuum pump (a few times) and the alternator. The only things left to change is the tensioner (I have a belt routing sticker and a spare bracket to do the dual mod) and the AC.

Does changing the front seal on the compressor mean depressurizing? I'll forgo that as that seal ought to be lubricated with the freon's oil.

You bought all motor craft parts, would you have bought someone else's if you had the time?

The AC clutch kit from Pure Diesel Power was a $100 and I ordered it only to find out they were out of stock. Then I ordered the kit off of Rock Auto and it was motorcraft. I ordered the kit because my coil and pulley were all burned up. If I would have done regular maintenance like your doing then just the pulley would have been good enough. The pulley comes with the bearing pressed in. You don't change the front seal on the compressor, its on the inside. After taking the stuff off, there is just the shaft sticking out. So no, you don't have to depressurize the system.

Well, it didn't work! The ac clutch kit that I installed, according to a friend, is to much for the compressor to handle and blows out the seal on the compressor shaft. Mine is blown and spraying Freon all over. So much for that attempt to save some money but I still feel that it was worth a try!

Just brought up a old thread for information purposes!

well darn. The old clutch must have been out of balance with the faulty clutch for long enough. Usually its ok but it must have been too far gone. Sorry to hear it.

I replaced the whole AC system myself. Wasn't hard. The auto skills shop on post helped vacuum the compressor for a couple bucks. i didn't realize that the Ford AC on these trucks blew so cold! And when I took the old compressor apart, the clutch had completely blown up, bearings seized and it was a mess.

Glad you got home Glenn!

I love my ac, will not go without it. I've made a few trips to Vegas so my wife can see a specialist for allergies and probably will again next week.

Thanks John and Richard, I think I'll let my nephew do it, I don't know much about ac.

No problem! Mine had already vented all the crap out, so disconnecting it was easy.

Just be sure that the system is flushed with the right chemical or you will loose your new compressor in short order.

Richard
