Don't be discouraged!!!
Don't be discouraged!!! Anyone who has ever owned a 1996 Ford F150 knows exactly why you would spend a good deal of money to have this baby up and running!!!
However, you can save a lot of money by working on this truck yourself. With it having been sitting for 2 yrs, it sounds like you can work on it, doing one repair at a time.
Just my opinion, but these folks are definitely trying to rip you off. If the truck was NOT repairable they wouldn't have offered to buy it from you. And I can promise you, they will NOT spend the money they are asking you to pay them on this truck.
So, what's up with the amount they want for the tires??? I can buy a set of good street tires around here for well less than $400-500.00 installed, (US $) that is!! Of course, a person can spend a pretty penny on tires if they want. I don't want the cheapest tires for my 96, but I also am NOT gonna put the most expensive tires on my truck, either!!! I mean, if you are buying racing tires or specialty tires, then that is entirely another subject.
As for repairs, I am a girl (duh) and I do a lot of repairs myself!!! I bought a Chilton book for my truck, but I also hear that Haynes has a very good book that you can buy as well.
So, anyway, I have no idea what you have decided, but if I were you I would definitely get a 2nd opinion.
Being a gal, I have had all kinds of folks try to rip me off. I have met my share of idiots and some top notch sage mechanics that were worth their weight in gold!!!!
And if I were you, even if I had to take a trailer to hall the truck away, I would tell them, "NO!!! THANK YOU!!!" in no uncertain terms.
Hope I encouraged you to keep working on your truck!!!
