My 82 has eaten its 2nd starter inside of 2 months... just all of a sudden it acts like the starter is dragging and then it just clicks at the solenoid.
Replaced the battery, turned the motor by hand and everything, even changed the battery ground and starter cable out with new, also the solenoid and i'm still getting a click, and the motor isn't turning.
Now here's my ?? for everyone, could a cracked flywheel cause it to chew starters up like this? I mean the truck has always had a rattle...pretty quiet in park, but it really rears its head when you are going down the road...i mean not obnoxiously loud... but you can tell its rattling...
Could this possibly be whats causing the starters to go so quickly??
IF its the flywheel, i'm going to put on one more starter, and then i'm tossing the c4 etc for a 4spd...at least with that it can be push started if it eats another starter.

What condition is the ring gear around the flywheel in??
Are the teeth badly worn??
Did you exchange your starter? They may have given you the wrong one.
Flex plate cracked around the bolt holes?
This truck has an automatic trans?
Can you move the flexplate around or is it securely attached to the Crank?
I have seen Flywheel bolts come loose before.
Don't know if its cracked around the bolt holes or not.
Auto tranny, c4
I can't move the flexplate around any at all...
Funny if the flywheel had came loose, i wouldn't be able to turn the motor over at all... i can turn it by hand, but its pretty difficult to do so.
I replaced the starter this morning... had it benched at the parts store and it came back perfect, but i made em give me a new one anyhow.
I replaced the solenoid at the same time, and now im back to square one, with nothing but the sol. clicking when i jump it out...or just clicking once when i touch the key.
Also when i turn the key, my ammeter gauge jumps around like crazy... and then finally settles into the center mark on the meter. (factory dash gauge.)
I'm going to try and swap batteries again since i changed all this up and see what i get from it...because this honestly & truly has me puzzled.
Your negative battery cable may have a bad connection
There are two connections on it (As I recall) one on the frame and one at the engine block...
Use a voltmeter and see if there is 13 volts (or so) at the solenoid. Then check and see if there is the same voltage to the starter when you attempt to crank it..
Hm...well i swapped batteries, and after a few clicks from the solenoid it cranks right off.
Interestingly enough, the truck at idle when first started, the ammeter gauge jumps towards the charge side, but when i put the truck into gear and it drops back to the center, and will not move. If i turn the lights on, etc.... it'll move ever so slightly.
I need to put in my aftermarket gauge cluster and see what she's really doing... but for now ill just put the fluke on it and see whats up under the hood.
