Starting Problems

Hey guys, thanks for the recent help with the cooling problem on my '79 F150 I posted. Now I have a starting problem, or more of a question. If the battery is weak, could you possibly have enough current available to spin the starter but not enough for the starter drive to engage the pinion gear with the flywheel? After sitting over the weekend, my battery was low. The first try, the starter engaged and the truck started, then went dead. When I turned the key again, the starter spins but is not engaging the flywheel. Possibly because the battery is too weak? If not, would I have to replace the whole starter or can you replace just the drive that engages the gear with the flywheel?

You can replace just the drive if the battery isn't the problem.

Thanks for your help; the battery being weak was the problem.
