Something's not quite right --- either high internal resistance (check with an ohmeter -- anything higher than 1.0 ohms (primary) and 11,500 ohms (secondary) would be a problem) or something nearby (e.g. distribution, associated electronics) is shorting/failing thus causing it to pull high battery current.....

It may be normal with your type of ignition. Just unplug the Ignition Control Module (ICM) while you have the oil switch jumped and working with the fuel system.

They do get toasty, though why have ignition on without cranking or running?

So he can use a test light to trace out the wires to the fuel selector valve and the fuel pumps with the oil switch jumped.

Easy enough to pull the horseshoe connector on these DSII coils.

The coil WILL get hot if you leave the ignition on.
Once the field is saturated the only place for that electricity to go, is into heat.

Module shouldn't be heating up with the coil disconnected.
There is not current for the transistors to hold back.
