351w water pump

351w water pump
I have been doing a ton of research on the whole revers and standard rotation pumps and cant quite find what im looking for. I have a 95 f-150 4x4 reg cab. I swapped the 300i out for a built 351w I had built for it. now the motor I build from scratch, all I had was just a block. I had non of the parts so I had to piece the engine together. the timing cover I have is a standard rotation cover. I am having trouble finding out what year pump I need. what years did they make standard rotation pumps or what other cross references would work?

My '97 460 has two serpentine belts, both of which drive the water pump off the inside of the belt. But that's a 460. As far as I know all 351W serpentine belt systems were single belt which drove the water pump off the back side of the belt. So unless there's an odd-ball serp belt system for the 351 that's set up like my 460, then Eric is right, you'll need a reverse rotation water pump and the correct timing cover.
You might be able to mount a serp belt pulley to a regular rotation water pump by drilling new holes or something. But if you do, you'll end up spinning the water pump the wrong way and at best it will pump water through the engine the wrong way (and probably won't work well at all). Plus the water outlets won't be in the right place for standard hoses to hook up. You really need to either get a complete V-belt system (including radiator, water pump and timing cover) or a complete serp system (including those same parts). Kludging something together from both will be a nightmare that may never work out well.

ya ive seen a few people run a serp. set up with a standard rotation pump just got to drill new holes and rout the belt around the water pump on the groove side so the pump rotates clock wise. im only running a alternator and water pump. no power steering or a/c. I already have the standard rotation timing cover install and sealed so I might as well stick with it. just needed to know what year pump I needed to get or from what vehicle for a regular rotation

OK, that'll work. I still think pulling everything together to make it work will be tougher than starting with a complete system. But if you're not running a power steering pump you aren't running a complete system anyway. That's why they call them project trucks!
As far as year, I can't say exactly where the breakpoint was. I know my '85 F-250 had V-belts and my '95 F-150 had a serp (both were 351W). So I think Eric's "probably mid-'80s" is pretty close.
