Crank, crank, no start..let off the key and it STARTS!

Silliest thing I've seen in a while.
Usually starts in 1 second crank, but noooooo.
let off the key and it starts, everytime within a second or 2.
Starter spins fast, so not like running dead batter amperage
and you can crank it for a full minute and it will Not start
Get it spinning and let go of the key on the upstroke and
and it will fire every time, instantly.
I love these trucks.
Theftproof, for sure.

Your issue sounds very similar to the one in this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...asing-key.html

Danr1 explains the most probable cause and how to test.

the old 89 F-250 5.8 at the body shop did the same thing.
something in the computer screwed up, and it was not sending power to the fuel pump when the key was in start position.
i added a second fuel pump relay to get power with key in start and it fixed the problem.

Back in the day, there used to be a bypass wire to the coil so that it was getting a full 12V when cranking, versus about 9V when running. If the bypass circuit was broken, then you would get these symptoms. In the modern world I am not sure if that still applies (although the attached thread indicates that it does) so I would try running a wire directly from the battery + to the coil + and see if it starts normally in that setup.
