Red face 2010 Escape - new throttle body recall?

Just left the dealer after sudden problems with wife's 2010 Escape

She has the 2.5L, 4-cylinder engine, approximately 82,000 miles on the odometer and it suddenly started having issues with running properly. It started just cutting off with her or slowing down to barely over an idle. After stopping and starting the engine again it would run fine... for a short period of time.

Took it into our wonderful Ford dealer for a checkup. He ran the diagnostics and determined it was a throttle body issue. When they called to tell us it was ready for pickup they also informed us that it was covered under a recent (less than a month) recall and there would be no charge. Damn, I love doing with business with a Super Ford Dealer - Havana Ford, Havana, FL!

That's awesome, richard1586! If you'd like, I can document your positive feedback in our system for internal review. To get the ball rolling, PM me your full name, daytime phone number, dealership info, and any specific you'd like me to include. I'll do the rest.

It would be nice if our Official Ford Rep here would confirm or deny the existence of an actual RECALL on the Throttle Body.

Many of us have received a letter from Ford dated January 2014, that lays out Customer Satisfaction Program 13N03. It extends the warranty on the Throttle Body to 10 Years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever comes first. A one-time repair program.

Furthermore... "If your vehicle has already exceeded the time or mileage limits listed above, this coverage will last through January 31, 2015. Coverage is automatically transferred to subsequent owners".
One would think that someone at FORD would proof-read the letter before it goes out. How can a 2010 vehicle possibly have exceeded the 10 year limit as of the letter date of January 2014?

Anyway, a RECALL is a call-in for a fix, hopefully and usually BEFORE the actual failure occurs for the far majority of vehicle owners.

An EXTENDED WARRANTY is totally different. You have to suffer the failure FIRST. Wherever and whenever that may be. Dead of night, middle lane on a busy rush-hour expressway, making a left-turn at a busy intersection, driving to a hospital, etc. etc.

If there is indeed now a RECALL on this problem, we should hear about it. Thank you.

I think the OP used the term "recall" loosely and there isn't one. Since the GM ignition switch thing, I don't think any manufacturer is going to hide/stall an actual recall which is a safety problem at this time.

Hi Torky2,

Customer Satisfaction Programs (CSP) aren't the same thing as recalls. A CSP is an available upgrade to a specific component or an extension of an existing warranty. These are VIN-specific and time and mileage limitations apply.

To check on any recalls applicable to your truck, just enter your VIN here: Recall Notices| Ford, Lincoln & Mercury Owners | Official Ford Owner Site

UPDATE - I received in the mail today a letter from Ford for a new program:

Customer Service Program 13B17

This is in addition to the previous 13N03, which I outlined above. The new 13B17 program is for the customer to bring their vehicle into the dealership to have the PCM reloaded with a newer program that will allow more engine power when in the failed throttle body mode.

They have a paragraph describing the throttle body problem, and then have the following paragraph which I will copy here verbatim:

"In the interest of your satisfaction, Ford Motor Company has developed an updated powertrain calibration strategy that will allow more engine power based on driver input and vehicle performance. Ford is providing the updated calibration to you at no charge. This program is in addition to the Customer Satisfaction Program 13N03 announced earlier this year, which extends the warranty on the Throttle Body to a total of 10 years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever occurs first."

They go on to say that:
"This program will be in effect until July 31, 2015, regardless of mileage - and is automatically transferred to subsequent owners."

Escape Hybrid Not Covered by 13N03 ???

Hi,

This is my first time posting here. I have a 2009 Escape Hybrid 86,500 miles with the same problems as everyone else, wrench, red triangle, pull over safely, surging 900-1100 RPMs at low speed, etc

Been getting progressively worse last few weeks. Now get the wrench/red triangle every 5-10 miles with DTC P2112 Throttle Stuck Closed.

Brought it to the dealership and played dumb. They diagnosed it as failed throttle body. They want to Replace TB, Flash PCM, Clean Induction for $1001.00

I then mentioned 13N03 and asked does my vehicle qualify. Answer NO, only for certain models 2005-2012 at certain plants & build dates.

I checked my build date is 10/11/2008 at Kansas City Assembly Plant. 13N03 I believe applies to all 2005-2012 Escapes with build date before April 29th, 2009. My Escape meets these criteria.

I would really appreciate any insight anyone can provide. Does anyone know if/why my Escape hybrid is not covered by 13N03? I watched the YouTube video, and I just can't pay $1000 to have them install a $125.00 part that takes about 20 minutes to replace.

Has anyone had their Hybrid TB replaced under 13N03? Does $1001 seem absurd to anyone other than me? This is making me sick thinking about having to come up with that much cash.

Thanks,
Eric

All that's been said is that it's certain VINs depending on where and when they were built not all. It's sad to say but if they are wrong, you'd be able to get a refund but later.

Finally back on the forum....

Bill, say it aint so!! I have to bring mine in. I had TB failure while on an RV trip. Ford dealer replaced it then but got the $$ back recently when they extended the warranty.

I took the 2010 2.5L in last week for the 13B17 updated powertrain calibration reflash for throttle body. They did it while I waited.

When I drove it home, I took a route that had a lot of mixed driving conditions, just in case learned strategies needed to be relearned. Seemed to be OK, didn't notice anything different. Too early to know whether gas mileage will be affected.
