1993-1997 diesel swap

Hey guys, I have a 1993 f-250 that im pulling the engine out of (351W) and putting a 1997 powerstroke into it along with a new (to me) zf5 transmission. Thoughts, comments, or ideas to help would all be appreciated. Currently stuck on removing the E40D transmission off of the diesel, any help?

What do you mean you are having trouble removing the tranny?

If you unbolted the torque converter and then did all the bell housing bolts (and external bolts) it should just about drop out...

Where abouts are you?

there may be someone nearby who can help.

Having a problem getting the top most bolts on the bell housing. Torque converter is already unbolted and axel has been pull out. I guess i forgot to mention this engine is still in the truck. A 1996 f-250. I currently have it mostly ready to come out. Just the tranny and the wiring harness.

In Oregon

I have a 3-ish ft long extension just for those top bolts. Between that and possibly a universal (and maybe another extension or two) I run it over the tranny and loosen from the rear of the transmission.

Also not that those bolts should be the first to come out, not the last.

If they are the last, as you loosen them the tranny could put weight on them and make them a pain and possibly damage the threads.

Richard

EDT: note that this is general advise, I have not actually pulled the tranny in my truck but have pulled trannys in many other vehicles. be sure you use a tranny jack.

Alright I'll give it a shot, i dont have any bolts out yet, i was trying to get the tops first as i knew they would be the biggest pain.

Another question, could i get away with running leafs up front in my 93 or should i swap to coils for the extra weight of the diesel?

as far as I know, 2WD had coils (execpt for the f-superduty OBS), 4wd had leafs....

you will likely need heavier springs eventually in either case. I think the diesel is easily twice the weight of the 351w.

I think you might also need the radiator support and the engine cross member (just guessing though).

Richard

EDT: I also assume you have the engine plate for the manual tranny and it is a zf5 from a diesel....

Yeah i planned on swapping the radiator support, dont know about the crossmember. Think I'll let it ride as is.

Once you have the engines out you can compare the two. should be fairly obvious if the cross member needs to be changed.

Be sure to reseal the oil pan and front cover on the diesel while it's out.

there is a plate that goes between the engine and the transmission bell-housing. it is different between the manual transmission and the automatic.

Also, if the flywheel you have is an original dual mass, I would recommend replacing it with a single mass flywheel and clutch set... Dual mass flywheels have the tendancy to grenade.

^^^^^ You'll want to leverage all this work with a new clutch kit and flywheel anyway.

Is the recipient truck a 4x4?

Well part 1 of 3 is done. Got the diesel out with little to no difficulty and was even able to leave the turbo attached. On to step 2, remove the 351w from my 93.
