Does anyone know where I can get a hold of some torque converter bolts for a c4 tranny? A couple years ago, I bought a TCI C4 and converter, but I could not find short enough bolts for it. Of course most parts stores don't carry a lot of bolts, so I went to the local Ace Hardware. I had to end up using the shortest size they had, but it was still too long. So I basically bought thick washers and called it good.
Now that I'm taking it apart, I want to have the right bolts rather than using a bunch of washers. Will I just have to go to Ford for this?
hi, i am really not sure what you are trying to do but i will help the best way i can . the converter on my c-4 has studs that require nuts to attach it too the flex plate if i remember right ? if you have a local tranny shop that has been around for awhile they might still have some parts in inventory. if all else fails a ford dealership might still have something c-4 stuff ,but again try to find a dealer that has been around for awhile you will have a better chance of them have the older stuff stashed someplace .
Be careful what grade of bolt you use to secure that C4 torque converter, or the tranny to the bell housing. I don't think Ace, HD, Lowes, etc., carry a grade of bolt that is rated for securing a tranny or torque converter to an engine. I may be wrong but I think the grade of bolt that you want to use is going to have to come from FoMoCo.

I used the original bolts for the tranny to the engine, so I'm pretty sure those are Ford. But for the converter to the flexplate, I just bought grade 8 bolts.
The old transmission was a FMX. And you know what, now that I think of it, I remember seeing studs come out of the FMX's converter! Since the converter was shipped without studs, I must have assumed that they use bolts. My tranny application is 70-81, so the tranny shop would probably be a good idea.
One last thing. If I can't find anything, do you think a grade 8 is strong enough for the studs?
Well what do you know! I typed in converter studs at summitracing.com, and TCI actually makes a set that includes the nuts! And it says for Ford V8. I wish it would have mentioned that somewhere after buying all of their other parts.
Just to keep your options open, Grade-8 bolts should be plenty strong enough. If they are too long just cut them down shorter and dress the ends with a file or grinding wheel, I do it all the time w/o any problems. I bought a SS Engine bolt kit for my 302 rebuild and I needed to cut down quite a few bolts because they were too long. Which ever way you go, remember to use some Blue Locktite on the threads when installing.
