Oil Change info
Hi,
Thought I would tag a question here as the closest I could come without posting a new one.
I have recently purchased a fully restored 1952 Mercury 1/2 ton. It was a labour of love by Mike Decoffe.
It has a 255 flathead V8 but most outer atributes are the same as the 239.
Question - I am doing an oil change, I have removed the oil filter and bottom plug, oil has drained except for what is in the filter cannister. Do I have to remove the line to get the oil out.

I wouldn't remove that line for that purpose. Just too risky to mess something up or start a leak. Most guys just sacrifice a couple of rags and absorb the oil that way, or you can use one of these.

Edit: Some of the oil filter canisters have a small drain plug at the bottom. Make sure yours doesn't have one before you do it the hard way.

The line drains the center tube in the filter housing. The only holes in the tube to let oil out are halfway up the tube, so unless your housing has a drain valve on the side (rare), you are stuck getting the last half of the canister's oil out. If you suck that oil out like Doc says, see if the bottom of the canister is full of sludge. If so, now would be the time to remove the canister and clean it out. Any sludge in there is likely to contain lead compounds that may be absorbed thru your skin, so be careful and wear gloves!
