The best way to measure the width of a rearend is wheel mounting flange - flange. The 61.5 number is that measurement.

Thanks for the info, , the reason i am asking is right now i have a 10 bolt chevy rear axle and using adapters to get to ford bolt pattern, i want to lower and lose the adapter, so i was thinking swapping the axle is the best way, just go back to ford and myabe find onejust a little smaller, , i will read the info,
Thanks

I measured mine today and its 54 " alot smaller than the 61 1/2, , i have a few ways to go, ,

1 is to get tires to match the front, 225 70 15 the rear is255 70 15, , and redrill the wheels
2 find a rear axle ( ford )that will fit with the tires i have, then have to remove leaf springs, or deal with hangers, , seems like the first would be the simple, i just dont know about drilling the wheels, , so have read the links and looking for a rear axle

Thanks again for the links

Get a rearend out of a 96 - 2002 Explorer...if you get one out of an XLT model it will have disc brakes, 31 spline axles, 3.73 gears with TracLoc. It is 59.5 inches wide and has 5x4.5 FORD wheel lug pattern. Around here they can be gotten for $120 and up. Oh yeah...they already have leaf spring pads on them (although they made need to be moved a bit).

I have to be careful, , that i dont go too wide, , i need to get my wheels under there, , my whole goal is to lower it, , i do have a 1" to 1 1/4 " spacer i wil lose too, , i think i need to stay with 5 x5 1/2 bolt patteren? i think thats what i have so that the wheel will work, , i need ti check and make sure what i have, , right now with the spacer (adapter ) the tire is flush with the backing plate, you know what i mean?
Thanks

Get your axles redrilled or get new axles. A lot less work.

Thats what i would like to do, ,i been calling around trying to find someone that will do it, , i dont think that will be enough, losing the adapters would give me about 1" on each side, if i could get tires go from a 255 to a 225 that would work, and changing tire size would lower it also

Ill keep calling around

Thanks
