Assuming this is a 9" rear end. The axles need to come out before the center section can be pulled. There are four bolts holding a cover on each side, accessable through the hole on the axle flange.

After removing the bolts you will need a slide hammer to pop the axles out. The center section will now be able to be removed.

I had the same problem on my 9" when I blew a axle seal. Drivers side would not come out. I put the drum on backwards with the lugs on, not tight, just enough for the drum to hold. Then it is a tug of war. Banging the drum in and out till the axle came loose. I didn't have a slide hammer. It worked for me.

Replace the axle bearings once you get thru beating on them, it ruins them.

Built-in slide hammer...

Just FYI everyone, all Fords with drum brakes come with built-in slide hammers. Just take the drum off, flip it around and put at least three of the lug nuts back on so the threads on the stud is flush with the nut (don't want to use too little thread or you risk stripping the stud). Then use the drum as a slide hammer till the axle pops out!

Done it many times and never fails to work!

Lifted78, I think that is what I posted. Check Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. They have new axles and used ones. Lifted78 is right on replacing the bearings. Make sure you put in in a new seal too.

(egg on face!) I -swear- I didn't see your post ramrod! But it's good to know there are others that think like I do! (grin!)

And, the bearing replacement idea is Torque's and a good one at that. They are just too inexpensive to overlook replacing them. Good money spent in my book.

Cheers

I used to use a length of log chain on the studs and then just "cracked the whip" with the log chain to pull the axles.

When you apply an impact load thru a bearing it puts very small dents into the bearing race where every ball is. When the bearing rotates those tiny dents act like potholes in a road and the bearing ***** bang into them every time they roll over. Unfortunately the bearing race acts just like a pothole and chunks of the metal will break off. The metal chunks then just get under the other ***** and into the rear diff gears and break off more chunks of metal. This will rapidly erode your gears and bearings causing total failure.
