Trying to figure out what this is?

So I pulled off the front left wheel with the intention to do some maintenance (caliper slide pin lube, check brakes & rotor, install Warn hubs -- I know you don't have to pull off the wheel for that , and possibly shoot some grease into the ABS sensor for the wheel assembly.)

Needless to say only the Warn hubs were a success since the neighbor came over in a panic and needed help cutting down a tree -- trust me that could a whole another post entitled "Stupid stuff your neighbor does and comes running for help!"

But the real reason for this post are the pictures below. If you look at where the red arrows point, this ring or seal was around the front left axle and is very loose. You can't tell from the pics, but I could move this ring 3/8 of an inch front or back. So -- what is this and is it normal (the movement) or a problem I need to address. Thank you.

Edit: Disregard my original response, the seals you are pointing to are different than the axel seals that I had issues with.

dscabra - no problem. I think that is a dust seal, just trying to confirm now.
