okay, i have a 1996 ford f150 with the manual locking front hubs. while the truck is moving, i hear a squeaking/ort(like a seal) sound comming from the driver's side front wheel. i was wondering what it could be. if it is wheel bearing how would i change it with the manual hub?
But if not its the same disassemblely as changing a rotor less taking the rotor off... pull the oil seals (flat head or seal puller) Pack new bearings toss in an drive in new rear seal. easy stuff for most DIY'ers.
it's not my brakes, i took the caliper off just to see. does any one know where i could get a break down? i was told i need a special tool to do it, is that true? like i said i have never done the manual hubs. if it were the reaer, i would have no questions. lol.
The only special tools needed are a pair od smap ring pliers and a hub nut socket. You can rent a kit from advance so you know you have the correct one when you start the job, and when you are done you can return it and get your money back. Page 8-16 and 8-17 of the haynes manul shows how to take remove and install the hubs. It is actually prretty easy
Check to see if the tin backing plates are rusted out and rubbing the rotor. Very common and you dont really need them. if they are rusted out just rip them off. Also see if there is a build up of rust on the rotor that making contact with anything.
