Missing carb ID tag

I have a 1978 f150 4x4 short bed with a 351M. It has the original carb and the tag is missing. I had the carb rebuilt but the mechanic says there is wear at the shaft (so I have a vacuum leak and need to replace the carb). The truck has an auto trans, was a California truck and was not high altitude. It is also non-AC.

Is there any way to identify what carb I would need to order at the parts house? So far I have been to Napa and Star and they say they need the tag info. Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting...I wonder how much difference there is between the different carbs. I'm guessing it is more about jetting and float settings right?

The Ford master parts catalog shows two possibilities, both have the same description.
Carburetor, Motorcraft 2bbl
Fits '78 F100-250 w/ 351M, A/T & California emissions
Tag number D8TE-CRA or D8PE-APA

When I do a Google search for both numbers info comes up for each one which sounds like my truck. Somehow I need to find the right one:-(

Just a driver, but I live in California and have to get it smogged. If the settings aren't right it may be a gross polluter and then I will be black balled.
