Question re-installing vent in F-1

I am in the process of renovating my early 1950 F-1 and having a real dilemma with the cowl vent. I took it out to be able to clean and paint the area, but now am totally unable to figure how I got the vent out in the first place and how to get it back in place. Overall it seems too big to fit into the opening. Clearly that's not the case since it was in there before. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. pw

cowl vent re-install

Bob, Thanks for the reference. That's exactly what I am trying to do. I wasn't clear as to whether I should take the bar off. It just seems too big to get in there...I'll just have to re-study your photos. They are really helpful. Now that I have your ideas and photos, I'll get back to it tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks. pw

You shouldn't have to take the bar off. I just happen to grab a vent assembly that didn't have the bar. The trick is to disassemble the pivot bolt. Once you have the bolt out the assembly becomes limp and should be able to manipulate it into the opening. Just remember how the pivot bolt is assembled because it's easy to forget how it is put back together.

cowl vent re-install

Bob,I hadn't seen your post before tackling the vent this afternoon. I had the most difficulty getting the bar out,but with it gone we had little difficulty getting it in. I had tried innumerable times to put in the whole unit, but it just seemed way to wide. By removing the bar, I was able to push in the portion on the passenger side and it just popped in. I was concerned about the bolt and how it actually functioned, but put it back in as it was, and it works great. It looks like it was much easier for me without the hood installed as compared with your photos. Thanks again for the tips. One more challenge accomplished. Now if I can only figure out the windows/regulators/ and vent windows, I'll be set. phil.
