Does anyone know how to install the cowl vent on a 48-52 F1? When I got my truck the PO had a piece of sheet metal screwed on to where the cowl used to be. I found a new one on eBay, and for the life of me, can not get it to go in. It is the right size, but the way the arm is attached to it, I cant get it to fit through the opening. Does it go from the inside out? HELP!
It goes together from the outside in. It goes in fully assembled with the handle end going in first. It does not go in easily and it seems to take me a while each time to get it just right. It is a pain but once you get it positioned just right it will go in there.
I highly recommend having the cowl vent installed and working on our trucks. They do a tremendous job of ventilating the cab. lol
This makes the assembly limp and allows it to go in as a straight line. Reassemble the bolt assembly after you have the vent in the truck. Make sure you take note how the bolt assembly goes together. I have trouble getting it back together every time I take one apart.
Yeah, I already have. The bolt was out when it arrived, and I had the hardest time figuring out the correct way for it to go back in. I have tried getting it in with it disconnected, but I think I have to remove the wiper motor assembly that is mounted there. I'll just have to keep trying and getting frustrated

Please mind my stupidity because I only recently became a classic girl but what is the purpose of a cowl vent. I noticed it on the front of mine but have no idea what it does nor do I know if it even works ...

The cowl vent when opened directs copious amonts of fresh air into the cab. I drove cross country with Willard (my 49 F-1) in the late 70's in hot weather. I would not have wanrted to do the drive without it. I am now putting AC in Willard and like the cowl vent so well that I am keeping it. Usually if the vent has not been opened in a long tine a good dousing with PB Blaster and wire brushing of the mechanism from under the dash is in order before opening it. The gaskets that seal for rain usually need replacement.
There should be a lever under the dash that you have to push forward to open the vent. Pull back to close it. The vent allows outside air to enter the cab.
The air conditioning systems on these trucks were commonly referred to as 5-40 systems. They operated by opening all five air inlets, the four windows and the cowl vent, and going 40 mph to cool off!
Looked and looked and can't find that cowl vent handle. Any help on location on a 60 ...
can't find mine on my 59 either......he said with a smile. youre vents are on the kick panals on each side of the floorboard.you should have left and right vent ***** on your dash. have a fine day.
