48 F-1 Battery Tray Alternatives
We have installed a 75 Camaro front clip on my 48 Ford F-1. We are now at the stage where we’re planning the placement and mounting of the battery. Since the original battery tray mounted on the passenger’s side of the original frame rail which was removed to accommodate the Camaro front clip, we may now have to modify the stock battery tray or possibly mount the battery by an alternative method or in an alternative location.
I’m interested in how other F-1 owners have handled similar situations or other locations that others may used to place the battery. I like the location under the hood near the firewall but learning what others have done would be helpful.
I’ve seen articles about mounting the battery in a fabricated aluminum or steel box under the front fender. However it seems like (at least in our South Dakota climate) that the battery would then be exposed to mud, slush, water, dirt, gravel, dust, etc which doesn’t seem like a good idea.
I’ve also wondered about the possibility of placing the battery at the front end of the box. Has anyone tried that approach and what were the pitfalls, problems, advantages, etc.
I’d also be interested in other alternatives that may have worked well including an under the hood alternative to modifying a stock OEM battery tray.
Thanks very much for your help.
