Can anybody recommend a different battery tray for my 53 f100?
My tray is missing and I would rather spend my money and effort in locating it to eng compartment, rt. front corner I think would be best.
Have not found anything in catalog,s that is for this application.
I Should say that truck is getting a 5 liter efi but I think ther is room under hood for a battery. Also in possible future is firewall mtd power brake and air cond.
THANKS caddy 53 Chuck
My battery in my '51 is on passenger side firewall. A previous owner located it there on what looks to be a home-made "L" shaped shelf. I made a 3 sided stainless cover. Works great.
You can buy a fiberglass RH fender inner with a shelf for installing the battery. Most 53-56 stores have them. Mid-Fifty, etc carry them.
I did not go that way because a battery is too heavy for fiberglass. On my 56, I welded the battery door closed and installed a drop down box on the frame. I used a 2001 Econoline aux battery box that bolts to the frame, has a cover on top. I have to remove one bolt and slightly loosen 3 others to slide the box 1/2" rearward, then it drops down and hangs on cables. There is a picture in my gallery showing the box right behind the old battery splash shield.
I built a slide down battery box that will be frame mounted under the right running board... similar to the ones that Mid-50's and others sell... did mine in stainless and then bead blasted it... didn't need polish since it wouldn't be seen... I can take a couple of pics and post if you like
I built a SS slide down battery box that will be mounted on the frame rail under the right hand running board... bead blasted it...polish isn't needed under there..
one bolt and it drops down for removal of battery..
I can take some pics with dimensions if you're interested..
I used the original location on my 54. I had a couple extra running board brackets, so I cut one of them to fit along side the one used in the original battery location. Then I bought a plastic marine battery box and bolted it to the two brackets. I thought that I was making trouble for myself because of the inaccessibility of the battery, but have only once had to replace it. (It was not a new battery). It is really not that much of a hassle, only four sheet metal screws to pull back the carpet, then open the cover for battery service. I just have to make sure to use a battery with a lift strap on it so I can pick it up out of the box. After over a year's service with a used battery, I replaced it with a new one. There was no corrosion and the battery box was clean.
The only complaint I have with the under-the-floor battery is the difficulty in jump starting (someone else - maybe that's a good thing), because there is no main battery connection under the hood except where it connects to the starter solenoid.
that is something else I plan on adding to my truck... remote battery terminals (or connector) with electric doors and windows...tilt hood.. if the battery goes ..or drains down..and your battery is under the truck I can guarantee it will be raining and you'll have to lie on the wet ground to get a set of jumper cables on the battery... a short run of cable and a set of connectors will take care of that.. they make a cable set with a heavy duty set of copper connectors... service trucks use them to jump off other vehicles without raising the hood every time... not real expensive and wonderful to use...
