Battery Mounting

On my previous '49 I had a Firewall mounted Battery. This time around I'd prefer to hide it away. I know there are several frame and floor mount kits available.

I would be interested to hear what others have done, what worked well, what didn't work well, what you'd do different if you were doing it again, and pics if you have any. Looking for ideas. Nothing like real experiences to learn from.

Thanks,

Dawg-a-saurus

Mine is in the stock '56 location, but when I do it again, I will NOT put it there again! I will probably put it under the bed towards the rear of the truck with a flip down batter box and a remote set of jumpers to charge the battery or jump if necessary. Mostly this is cause of the way you have to do the carpet to get to the battery.

There is a way around that carpet issue, use a drop down battery box. Here is a link to tech. page at CPP

I've seen people put them inside the front fenders on Bonus Builts. Lots of room under there. You'd want to use a plastic enclosure/box.

On my 49 I bought a ss drop down battery box on ebay and mounted it on the passengers side under the cab near where it is on a 56 truck. I also wanted to hide it.

I have mine mounted under the bed floor in the upper right hand corner. It sets on top of the running board and outside of the frame rail. My bedfloor is approx 2" higher than normal so there is no interferance issues. I cut an access panel in my bedfloor.
For a regular height bedfloor it would be very easy to recess the running board.

I see it mentioned in almost every thread about the stock location.........

Can I ask a serious question in relation to the "jumping" or charging of the battery?

I have charged mine (stock location) several times over the last 2 years under the hood. I have not tried jumping it there, but I don't see an issue. The cable from the battery comes up to the solenoid. Just use that and a ground.

Why would I need access to the battery itself to jump it or charge it?

With modern sealed batteries it is rare that you ever need to remove them for any reason. Mine has been in there over 2 years now and I have not needed to access it.

Can someone explain the issue to me?

Stock location for Bonus Built's (48-52) is under the hood, back near the firewall. I think the question here is how to get it out of the engine compartment.

One thing that may make it easier, yet more expensive, is using an Optima battery. You can lay them on their side, and they still work....popular among the 4x4 crowd. I intend to use one mounted between the frame rails, and off the tranny crossmember. Since then, I've seen two possible spots that garnered my interest: 1. recessed in the cab behind the seat (requires relocated gas tank), and 2. hidden inside a fake box or keg in the bed towards the cab, with a piano hinge for easy access.

Thanks for the replies so far. Yes Scott, I agree I considered that as well. I think they also have some smaller package versions that are pretty powerful. I'm not going to need anything more than basic stuff to support.

You really don't need access to it as long as you have a good size cable(like the one to your solenoid) for jump starting. Some new cars are hiding their battery under the rear passenger seat or down low inside the fender. They put a remote terminal from the battery into the engine compt. for jump starting.

Havi,
I had considered the Optima (until it came time to fork out the money...what can I say, I'm a tightwad)
My original plan was to use and early ice chest in the bed as a battery box. I even went so far as to pic up a couple of ice chests at a swap meet to play with (I eventually sold them at another swap meet). It just worked out well for me to drop it under the bed.

I put mine behind the seat. I still need to make a cover for it. It is a sealed battery like an Optima. It is pricey!

Good Stuff folks keep it coming.

Don - I'm a big boy (fat-a$$) and need all the room I can get in the Cab. Does your Battery mount create leg-room problems ?

Thanks,

IM probably going to mount mine on the firewall in a custom setup.
Right now my truck has no battery. I bought a 50 Merc battery trey off ebay and I have new cables for a rear mount setup. I took my gas tank out and was going to move it behind the seat but theres not enough room since I moved the seat mounts back a few inches.
Now IM just going to put it on the firewall probably. My truck isnt a show truck so it really doesnt matter.
