1998 f700

I have a 1998 f700 with a 429 and a 6 speed manual. The trans code says dj. It is also a 4x4. I am planning on putting a diesel in it. I wanted to know what all diesel motor options were available and if any of them shared the same trans that I have. I already have a 96 5.9 cummins I can put in it but I need to know more about the transmission before I decide on a motor to swap in case I need to find a different trans.

Welcome to FTE.

The trans will probably work, you just need a proper bell for the engine.

For that size truck, you can put any diesel motor you want in there, Cat, Cummins, Detroit, IH, whatever you want. The work to do the vehicle conversion will be pretty much the same.

While the trans may be an issue, overall gearing would be of greater concern. Your gas motor runs out to what, 4000 rpms? The oil burners are going to run lower revs, and if your gearing is wrong, you will be hitting the rev limiter (if so equipped) at 40 mph.

You can probably find an engine trans combo to work with, getting back to the original question.

Do you have a budget, and are you doing the work yourself?

Yes there is a budget probably around $6000 and I'm doing the swap for someone else. I just don't know much about the f700 I work more with semis and heavy equipment. So I was just trying to utilize the trans with a different motor that will get him a lot better fuel milage since he is only getting 5 mpg and wants a diesel.

$6000.

Have your priced a used engine yet?

CUMMINS USED DIESEL ENGINE | eBay

Fuel, cooling, exhaust, controls, instruments, other electrical. It's all hours of labor.

I do not think $6000 is enough unless you plan on working for free for part of the project.

EVERYTHING has to "go your way" to swap an oil burner for that money.

5 mpg. What does he think an oil burner will return? We have 5.9 Cummins and 5.2 Isuzus in lightly loaded box trucks/walk in vans, GVWs of 16000-17000. I've checked them at about 11-12 mpg. I doubt a 4x4 F700 will pull any better than 10 mpg. Some math would be applicable here, keeping in mind his annual miles etc.

As a pessimist, of course I will be pleased to be proven wrong....

There were quite a few that came with a 5.9 and a 5 or 6 speed fuller or an Allison 545. A few had the 8.3 as well.

I have a 96 5.9 cummins already to sell him. I just needed to make sure I could get a bellhousing to go to his transmission.

He would like to get ten. It has a service bed on it. It may get 5000 miles a year put on it. The $6000 is just a guessed amount at what he is willing to spend but he really wants a diesel so I'm sure it can be raised.

I will get some more info of it tonight to see if you think I can use his transmission or I need to fine a donor truck

The transmission is a eaton fuller mid range trans model # F55366a serial #10003074. Can anyone tell me how that would match up with a 5.9 cummins? I know I need a bellhousing but I'm not sure how its gear ratios will work.

Overall gearing, as I mentioned will be an issue to consider. Do you know what ratios are in the axles?

Does that trans have an integral bell with an SAE bell pattern? (round)
