Won't turn over, trouble shooting help, motor locked?

Edit- Fixed it!

Need help here guys, just got a 1998 F150 5.4l 4x4 autotragic.

Was sold to me as needing trans, wouldn't start. Tossed in a new starter and solonoid, now I can hear the the starter turn crank pulley turns maybe a quarter inch and when I let off the starter it goes back to the same spot.

Fear is motor is locked, but question (i don't know automatics) is there any way that a bad trans could keep a motor from turning over? Truck rolls in neutral or drive, pulled the drain plug no water just oil. Tempted to just buy a running 5.4 with trans but if I can avoid that I'd prefer to.

Thanks in advance.

wouldn't go that far.... yet!
best thing to try now is double check the battery cables and connections related to the starter....make sure they are all good!

Pull the relay to the fuel pump...then remove the spark plugs....see if it can turn over by hand (wrench/socket on the crankshaft nut)...if yes getting it to turn over...then retry the starter with the plugs still removed....listening carefully each time you try to turning it over.

If you can't get it to turnover with the plugs out with a wrench or socket on the crankshaft nut, in either direction...or that reveals unnatural sounds....then you can prolly starting finding a donor to swap from.
