i know this isnt a diesel question but i know how knowledgable and helpfull you guys are so im hoping youl have an opinion on this,. explorer would not start the other day, the starter would try but couldnt turn it over, sounded like it was binding. so today i removed the starter and had it tested , passed electrical test but had play in the shaft of the starter gear. so i installed a new starter and it started up fine had a noise but i narrowed that down to a pulley bearing going out. the engine started fine over the course of the day a few times then left me stranded with the same symptoms as befor, will try to turn and either turn about a 1/4 turn or just start to turn a bit then kick back when you let off, acts like its bound or something, any ideas? motor is not locked up
I know that I have had problems in the past with things like that, but it was due to me timing the distributor 180 degrees out.
All older starters have play in the shaft of the gears. They will work fine for a while after that.
It sounds like you broke a tooth on the ring gear of the flexplate, to be honest. Or maybe a lot of teeth. Try turning the motor a bit by hand (big wrench on crank pulley) and trying it again. See if it will turn over then.
If it's not that, check for plug wires that are chaffed against each other. If they are causing the plugs to fire at the wrong time, it can keep the engine from even turning (like with my distributor being totally out of time, engine would not even turn).
yes, it runs like a top when it starts, ant i thought it may of been a flex plate issue as well but it doesnt seem to matter what location it is on it it still binds up
Subscribing.
Sounds a lot like hydrolock symptoms or like Kevin says, an ignition cross fire sending the spark to the wrong cylinder which will kick the motor backwards very hard.
Only cure for something like that is a complete tune up, cap, rotor, wires, plugs.
well i wasnt to far off track , the starter was getting alot of mechanical resistance but it turns out it came from that ac compressor pulley that locked up after driving a long distance apparently, guess it must of been the initial problem but it freed up when i put the first new starter on then locked up again, wich explains why it would turn the engine over some because it was slipping the belt id of rather it been another bad starter but its not. looks like anther long day tomorrow.
