HELP PLEASE!!!! 38r Installation Issue

Hey yall! I'm new to the forum but have been reading and learning from here for a couple years. I have a 7.3 manufactured in 08/2000 according to the sticker on the door and am having trouble installing a 38r. The factory up pipes are not lining up with the new turbo and are approximately .25" (enough to stick the tip of my finger in). I am also eliminating the ebpv and bought the blank pedestal and high flow outlet for it. The pedestals are the same size, so I dont think an early 99 one was sent. Attached are links to two photos that I took.

Thanks for all your help anything would be appreciated!

I would bet you aren't getting the locator pin on the baby's butt lined up on the 38R....I seem to recall the locator pin sticks out about 1/4". Good luck!

I've done this seversl times, and as stated above, that locating pin must be lined up or what you descrbied will occur. Get a mechanics mirror to see back there. You can also see from under the truck with a good flash light. By the way, the up pipes are a good idea, your going to need them eventually. Mine had no visible signs of a leak until they were off.

Baby's butt = the jobber deal the uppies feed into and is clamped to the hot side of the turbo.

did you loosen the up-pipes form the manifolds?? when installing a turbo, the up-pipes should be loosened on both ends, the I equally tighten them starting with the babys butt. make sure the pin/hole is lined up @ the turbo..

Oh, Welcome to FTE

Welcome to FTE. As mentioned, you need to loosen the up pipes, both at the exhaust manifold and the collector (baby's but) that bolts onto the back of the turbo.

And it would be easier if you put the band clamp on that connection before you lined it up since there's not a lot of clearance at the firewall. Nice pics though. It's hard to get that side view.

First off welcome to fte. Second loosen the up pipes on the collector. While your there may as well replace the gaskets with felpro gaskets to buy you a lot of time. Get the turbo lined up on the alignment pin then get everything tightened up. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice! The up pipes are about 12 years old and look pretty rusted. Worried that if i loosen them something would break, so I ordered a set of IH up pipes to replace them. Hopefully this will fix the issue. Thanks again for all the help, Im pretty excited about getting this thing on.

Sounds good. Remember not to tighten the up pipes to the exhaust manifold till you are connected to the turbo. Then tighten at the exhaust. You will love your new set up. Welcome to FTE, we can spend your money for you with PMS mods.

Good call. It helps when you can afford to take the repair/upgrade to the next level. The ups very commonly fail right about now anyway (they have been under that strain all along), so this may save you from repeating your work... plus you'll now have ups that aren't under strain.
