1991 f250 transmission issue
I have a 1991, f250 with 78,000 miles and with the 460 cubic inch engine. It has an automatic transmission with an overdrive switch. It has been shifting roughly, clunking into second and third as it accelerates. I have been leaving it out of the overdrive position, which helped at first, but no longer does. I got this truck and a camper from a friend three years ago on the cheap.
Does anybody have any advice about the transmission? I'm assuming it needs to be rebuilt? If I have to replace the transmission, because I use it for hauling a camper and would like to tow a boat as well, is there a certain type of transmission I would look for that would be durable and long lasting for that type of use?

That E4OD transmission is completely computer controlled.. Check and repair any trouble codes and the odds are the transmission will clear up and perform as it should.
Here is a cheap way to check for DTC's Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test
If you don't want to count flashes you can get an Equus 3145 code reader for $25 or $30 at your local parts store or online, Amazon is a good source...
BTW Welcome to FTE!!!!
