need help on hiboy axle hubs

hey guys i took my front hubs off my 76 hiboy to clean em and regrease em. everything was going good tore em down. repacked em with grease and went to put em on but i cant get either hub to go back on they go on about 3/4 of the way but they just wont engage that last 1/4. i turned the dial to both lock and free and still nothing. what am i doing wrong here? these are the factory style hubs. thanx

Make sure your axles didn't pull out a little. Did you disassemble the external hub components?

You reassembled the hubs correctly, right?

well i finally got the hubs back on lastnight but i really had to force them. but now i have another problem i put them on in the free position but when i went to lock them i couldnt get the dials to turn all the way and i was using a lot of finger pressure. i dont want to use pliers cuz the dials are only plastic. any advice what i should do now

How much grease did you use? the hub's internals only require a light coating of grease...

They don't get "packed" per se, a little goes a long way here, too much grease and they can become inoperable.

i did pack em pretty full of grease i thought thats how your supposed to do it. can the grease really stop the hubs from engaging.

Right there's your problem, pull the hubs and "degrease" them...

The springs and clutch gears need room to engage/disengage, packed full of grease they can't function properly.

that was it i took em back apart and cleaned out all the grease, i just left a thin layer on the gears and now they lock and unlock. thanx
