is it normal when the hubs are locked in that they are a lil noisey? i havent had the truck in 4wd for a good while now, about 6-8 mos ago i had the whole front end rebuilt when the gears were done and they put new wheel bearings in, fresh grease and superwinch hubs. now since then i havent used the 4wd since today, it engages fine and all just makes a humming noise and if i got the windows down and going slow enough i kinda hear a clicking noise? normal with these hubs or....
the superwinch hubs are crap i have them too and i HATE them, my drivers side hub always trys to engage while i am just driving down the road, the cotter pins that hold the hubs so they go up and down when you lock or unlock them bend very easily or break. i am about ready to get a new set of hubs just because of how crappy my hubs are, i would bet one of your hubs is not engaging all the way and the clicking is the hub hitting the splines on the axle shaft, or your u joints are shot and your hubs are alright
my u joints arent to old either but ill have to get it checked out i guess when there not locked in there pretty smooth and quiet though? and when i herd the sound the hubs were locked in but i was in 2H?
the problem with mine is those cotter pins keep bending or breaking because i lock the hubs in more than the regular guy lol so when a cotter pin breaks or bends (they are about the size of the lead in a pencil) the hubs try to engage even when it is in the FREE position, but they won't engage fully so they just make a clunking sound. if they are still good it should be all smooth and quiet. i would pull them off the truck and with them in your hand turn the hub to lock, the "hub locker" for lack of a better word should slide out but the cotter pin should not allow it to spin. if it spins you bent the cotter pin or it is broken or not long enough ect ect
I feel bad for you man sounds like you have a nice truck and don't need something like hubs messing you up especually after you just spend a bunch of money to get gears and a rebuild on the front axle. for now i just keep fixing my damn cotter pins but i really want a new set of hubs, now for some reason the passenger side hub on my truck has been pretty much worry free but the drivers side has SUCKED, i have installed larger cotter pins in both hubs and the passenger side does pretty well but the drivers side bends or snaps everytime i start to get some faith in it lol and usually when i am done playing in the mud and getting ready to drive home the hub is hard to disengage and the pin bends then i have to listen to it clack all the way home or if i'm lucky it will stay engaged
and don't you hate the bolts in the hubs they always strip the head out and you can't find bolts anywhere but summit. i ordered a new set of bolts for them and they were torx head which really helps with the stripping, i also seal my hubs around where the o ring is with permatex and put permatex on the bolt heads before i run them into the hub to keep water and crap out of the hubs
yeah if there suppose to be smooth and quiet locked then something is wrong,lOL! ill have to tear it apart and see whats going on. ill get a diff set of hubs if this is the case
if it is your hubs and you scrap these and get another set could you send them to me so i can have some spare parts to keep my hubs running lol i'll pay shipping for you just pm me if your interested
think i paid like $150 for the superwinches so there not to cheap either. so everyone is saying the warn's are my best bet?? the premium hubs with the gold in them or there reg hubs?
I'm not positive on the 1/2 ton stuff but I know on the 1 tons the warns were half plastic unless you wanted to spend a ridiculous amount of $$ on their "premium" hubs. So I went with superwinch on that truck and they were great.
Now that I have a 1/2 ton I have a new set of superwinch's sitting right here ready to go on in place of the stock auto sometimes lock/ unlock pieces of junk.
Whoever paid $150 for the superwinch's got bent over. I think they were $90 through Summit.
warn is the way to go. the only difference between the regular and "premium" hubs is the outer cover and turn dial. The innards are the exact same. So unless you plan on some rock rash on your cover you can go w/ the standard warns. I have the standard ones on my 95 D44 daily driver, but i got the premiums for my 89 mud truck w/ D50

I had the same problem. The hubs would always "click" when the truck was in 2WD with the hubs locked. I have the Warm premiums. I thought maybe I needed the spindle nut conversion kit because my truck may have had the autocrap hubs originally. I took both hubs apart, checked them out and everything seemed fine, but still the clicking. It would clunk around and make awful noises in 4WD. After that, we found that the front driveshaft u-joints were shot. Once they were replaced, the hubs have worked great eversince. There is still quite a bit of fron drivetrain noise however. I hope that in some way my rambling can help you.
