Getting new exhaust, go with a muffler or not?

Sorry for such a basic question but did alot of searching on the site & didn't really get the answer I was looking for. Been a member of this site for many years but have not posted alot but have used it often & have got a bunch of good info I believe.

Anyway have a 08 F450 that is out of warranty now & have nothing holding me back from doing what I wanted to do 5 years ago... It has been an awesome truck so far but from the first day I drove it was a little underpowered & has(IMO) got HORRIBLE mileage! Sure there are other good routes to go but I think the 210 Tow Spartan tune & 4" DP back exhaust seems to be the right fit for me.

Was just gonna do a cat/dpf delete pipe but figured for just a little more $ why not just replace the whole thing? Know the advantages of a stock looking exhaust but luckily we don't test here(yet) & there as of now is no emissions enforcement(that I know). Also I like the looks of a 5" tip but just was wondering what your thoughts were on mufflers? I wouldn't mind it being a little louder with a cleaner sound. Under heavy load now sounds like the exhaust of an industrial air conditioner... I'm thinking no muffler would be fine but just don't want a deafening roar when I'm pulling a 20k trailer on the interstate.

Whatever I go with of course can be changed in the future. Just would prefer to buy & install the "preferred" setup from the start. thx

I have a Banks Dual 4" exhaust behind a MBRP 4" DOC/DPF delete pipe & CAC pipe. I don't think it sounds any louder (like a gas V-8/V-10 rumbles). It does move a lot of air so you mostly hear air rushing out of the pipe. You can hear the turbo(s) just like on a big rig too. For me I like it without a muffler or resonator.

Silly mufflers. The 6.4 sounds good without a muffler.

My first 4" kit had a muffler. I took it out and it didn't sound much different sadly. Now I have an 8" stack lol. Now that's LOUD!

I have 4" turbo back and don't think it's bad at all. It really sounds awesome when you go under an overpass and romp on it a little though!

That was the I was leaning anyway but good to hear what others have experienced. Thanks for the help.

I went ahead & pulled the trigger yesterday on this! Speaking to the sales guy he talked me into a 5"(vs 4") saying it will give it a little deeper sound? We'll see... It was only a few bucks more & he said that the stainless upgrade was not necessary? Shipped with 6" SS tip for $1904 which I thought was pretty good. Anyway can't wait for my exhaust, tuner & egr block off kit to get here!

I'm sure I'll post my after mod findings. Know everyone is holding their breath as there are 1000's of nearly identical setups. Really just hoping for a 15-20% gain in mileage(unladen now 10 mpg, towing anywhere from 8.5-5.5 ) & a slight increase in power where the truck will hold speed & OD on decent sized rolling hills. That & of course longevity of the engine. Only have about 60K on the truck now but I hope to own it for MANY years to come. New(er) trucks are nice(400 HP, 800 lb/ft+) but not at $65k+...

It will be a completely different truck power-wise. You're going to love it.
