Ok here it goes........ So ya, I have had my 08 6.4 since 04/07. Love the truck but hate the fact you cant tweak it out for the most part and the mileage is poor. I purchased the AFE and nothing but CEL's so I threw it back to stock. I also took it to an exhaust shop when I first got the truck and had them run a new 4" tail pipe with a 5" double walled tip deleting the muffler cause it looks cleaner and was hoping to gain some hp.
Here we are a year down the road and I am ready to play. I realize all these companies came out with DPF back set ups for the exhaust with what they claim as having a better quality tip to keep the exhaust temps down. How big of a deal is that really? Will a standard tip like I have now make that much of a diffrence? At this point I am thinking I may scrap the custom tail pipe and buy an after market exhaust from someone so I can throw the muffler back on seeing it made no diffrence. Not to mention come smog time, I am asuming I will have issues passing if I dont have a muffler on? Which company would you recomend to purchase there exhaust set up where I can also go with the DPF delete pipe option if I choose that route? I have been looking at the banks system cause they claim to have the lowest exhaust temps.
I am pretty much set on the Spartan tuner but what to make sure come smog time I have no issues. I have also been reading about soot on the tail pipe meaning you could have a cracked dpf. Well the inside of my tail pipe is black but nothing else. Now I may take it in to the dealer and see what they have to say. Any help or suggestions would be great, thanks.
My understanding is replacing the tips will void the warranty. The muffler is really not a muffler just a resonator and not a very good one at that. If you have black in the exhaust pipes you could very well have a cracked DPF.

Can anyone chime in on this? If I think I might have a potential issue with the dpf I am gonna throw the stock stuff back on and take care of it before I go with an exhaust set up.
I hope you didn't throw away the cat, dpf and the stock pipes. That's a lot of money when all you needed was the delete pipe. If you still have the old exhaust put it back on and get the delete pipe and Spartan.
Ya I have the stock muffler and tail pipe in one piece on the side of the house. My tip I have on there now is black inside so I am gonna throw the stock crap back on. If the stock tail pipe turns black I am gonna take it in to Ford and see what I can do to warranty the dpf. Once I am done with that I may either go with the Banks system or just go with the delete and Spartan tuner. The truck has just over 21k.

It definately sounds like you have a cracked DPF. I would take it in to get fixed then go from their with an exhaust after you get a new DPF. It is just one less time you have to personally deal with taking it off then putting it back on for warrenty work. But then again, the dpf delete pipe from spartan was very easy to install.
One day you will need the original exhaust back at least here in the Atlanta area. They'll probably want to require emmissions testing on diesels to get your tag like they do here for gassers now.
I heard they are supposed to smog the new diesels here in CA just not sure when, and I cant imagine why the truck wouldn't pass even if you have an aftermarket exhaust.

HEY!! We don't need that kind of talk around here!
