exhaust question

I have ready MANY exhaust threads so sorry for another one. My current setup looks stock but shortened with muffler removedand welded by a blind person. Also the rear exhaust hanger cracked off the pipe and took a chunk of pipe with it. It's pretty much danglinig now. I've always ran SS on my VWs but just can't justify the cost for my tow rig. I am juggling between the magnaflow AL and MBRP. I am leaning towards the magnaflow (#18979) because I hear it may be a bit quieter. The truck is pretty loud now and I'd love to make it a bit quieter in the cab. I do love hearing the turbo spool but can sacrifice some of that. Also looking at a tip to cover the Al but looks like I'll need to get a 5" tip to fit the 4" exhaust?
Anyways, about to pull the trigger on this and looking for last minute real world experience..
Thnaks,
Brian

Many here run the MBRP system with no complaints. I run a Frankenstein version of one that is all SS with a aero turbine muffler. I would think almost anything would make less noise than what you have now with the hole in it and no muffler. SS is good for areas with heavy salt conditions and as you live in TX you may be able to get by without SS. I went SS for the salt air off the ocean and for when I travel back and forth to Wyoming or Washington. I have run magnaflow on past trucks and I think those two are very similar for day-to-day driving and the only real time they sound a little different is when you get on it.

What ever you run get the smallest tip you can, try to stay the same size as the pipe. All a larger tip does is make it louder.

Some of the 5" tips I've seen were actually 4" ID but 5" OD so that might be alright.

Ya.. I ended up ordering a 5" tip. I don't want that big but seems like you almost have to with a 4" exhaust. Here is the tip I got. It is double walled if you will so hopefully it will not be much louder.

Thanks,

I've seen many old truck with the factory exhaust, which is not SS, that has held up just fine. Salt and letting mud sit on on it will make it rust out faster.

The OEM exhaust is indeed stainless steel, just not the expensive kind that polishes up pretty. I forget the grade number.

it might be fine if the hangers were in place and connected to the pipes properly, the cuts and welds didn't look like the guy was asleep during the process, the muffler was still in place, and it didn't exit in front of the rear wheel like it does. I took a few pics I will try to upload shortly. I think it's the stop DP too so maybe this will give me a bit more power.
Thanks,
Brian

The cheap stainless is 409 as opposed to the good stuff which is 304.

I have never known just a tip to make exhaust louder (unless it is special whistle tip or something equally weird). By the time it gets to that last 8-12 inches it is what it is.

Here are the pics of my setup. Is this the stock down pipe?
Here are a few pics under the truck showing my current awesome exhaust.

Enjoy,
Brian

I have an experience that may or may not quite fit. I have a 2001 PSD, but also an 1989 7.3 IDI. So, I figured, same size engine, Ford probably new what they were doing with the 2001, so I had a local shop build me a 2001 turbo.

I have read that a turbo is sometimes listed as a muffling device. The back pressure valve butterfly is removed. The output flange is three inches. So with just a down pipe I had someone drive along side - in a quiet Cady - while I did a hard pull up hill. He said it didn't sound loud, just sounded like a diesel. I finished off with a three inch tail pipe and called it done.

It looks stock to me with a muffler delete and a 45/90 degree turn added to make it exit where it does. The tailpipe even looks stock, only moved to in front of the tire.
