Straight Pipes

My exhaust pipe is rusted out just infront of the muffler. So goodbye stock exhaust. Money is an issue for me, and straight pipes are always cool.
Would backpressure be an issue?
Any Pipes recommended?
Where do I get em?

My truck is stock everything, just picked it up today... Bought it a few days ago, but picked it up today... Wow, that thing has rampant manpower!!!!!!!

So any exhaust advice would be great...

These motors aren't like gassers, just let it breath. After you lose the muffler, you'll notice an improvment right away.

Are you going to run dual exaust? if so, then 2-1/2" with some glasspacks will work nice, and sound cool as hell also.

If you going to keep it single, then run some 3" all the way back starting at the y-pipe with no muffler.

Take the top off the air cleaner and see if the soup bowl is still there, if so, then get a hole saw to fit the air cleaner housing neck from the bottom, 5" I think, and cut that restriction out of there. These small improvments will add up to a desent running truck.

If you don't have a turbo, I wouldn't recommend a straight pipe.
They are very loud. I cut the muffler out of mine and it lasted about 3 weeks before enough was enough.

My exhaust fell off yesterday [one of the reasons i am looking at new exhaust options] and I don't think a strait pipe that goes "all the way back" could be much louder than it is right now...

I'm going to throw a K&N airfilter in, and I plan on looking into what I can do with the filter housing. More airflow makes Soth happy...

Thankyou for your time

All the Best
God Bless Ya

I have a '86 F-250 with the 6.9 non turbo. I have 2 1/2" pipes and glasspacks. This truck sounds very good and gets looks all the time. It sounds like a diesel at idle but when you step on it it sounds like nothing else out there. I drive on the freeway alot with this and the sound levels are not that bad. I love this sound and that is why I bought it from my father when he bought a new 2002. -Shawn

with my 6.9 L i have 2 1/2 with glass packs and echo tips sounds real good not to loud (the down fall) but loud enough to wake up neighbors! I to am looking at puting straight pipes on my truck! (the exhaust i have is very old and tring to fall off) I'm thinking of puting actual deseil rigs stack exhaust on my truck to give it that actual deseil appeal. Any suggestions on what i should do?

A friend of mine with a D#@$e is running a pair of 4" stacks. They come right through the flatbed and dump right behind the cab, at 45 deg. angles to the rear. Sounds REAL nice, even for a Cummins. I've got 2 1/2 open exhaust, dumping behind the passenger's rear wheel. Driving the truck home, the wife was right behind me, and she said she said I was smoking her out, even though she had the a/c on and the vents all blowing away from her. I said that was to prevent tailgaters. I'm gonna get a set of stacks and do the same with mine, once I get the flatbed installed, except I'm gonna do the stacks straight up with the hinged lid right on top, like on a tractor. The louder, the better. Oughta look cool, too.

Thumbs up

Had an 89 7.3 idi 2.5" duals, crossed over behind midship tank, equal length at tips each side of trailer hitch, sounded great but very loud, I cut out center of airbox to reduce restriction, had to be carefull around town not to attract attention and eventually got a noise ticket{3months of fun} carefull if you buy glasspacks, my first set were not straight through, restricted to much and way to quiet, straight through ones worked well but I made sure they were the same distance from the manifold.

Only drawback: Hard to get truck to warm up unless pulling a load!

Try it you'll like it!

Theres nothing that sounds better that some good ol' loud popping glass packs. Whats even better is when you have a hard shifting transmission and can get that 1-2 shift tire squill sound in with those popping glass packs. Hard to do that with a diesel though.
