need flywheel input *now with clutch issue

Can someone give me a quick overview of what to look for when messing with the flywheel/starter?

Scenerio: I just bought a 79 f150 4x4 with either 351m or 400, 4spd. I got it cheap because they burnt up a starter trying to start it, just to find out the motor was locked. I paid, got under it, spun the flywheel backwards and got the jam out (they said they already pulled a couple starter pieces out). Put a new starter and only got grinding. I'm not sure if I had the wrong starter or the teeth are too torn up or both. Pop-started it and drove it onto the trailer.

NOW, I need to get it startable. ring gears are cheap, so I'm gonna put a new one on, but I want to make sure it has the right flywheel while I'm in there, and also get the right starter. I can't remember what it should be, any help??

buy a new flywheel they aren't that expensive and get a new starter it well worth it to do work now and not later on down the road when money might be as big as a saddle blanket and scarce as hens teeth

the flywheel I saw was $360,, if that's cheap then I'd hate to live where you do. :P

Def going with new ring and starter, I just want to make sure I have the right ones. I have no clue if the ones in it are the right ones even,, maybe that's why the trouble now.

I just went through a similar issue, there is a difference between the 351 and the 400 flywheel. My original 12" flywheel had a 2" crack and had to be replaced. The 400 required the 180 tooth 12" flywheel. I found a close match on Craigs List but it wasn't perfect so I had to do a Franken-Clutch assembly to get it working.

Here was my original clutch and flywheel assembly.

The clutch on the left is my new replacement that fit my new 11" flywheel. It wasn't a perfect fit but it worked. My long term fix will be to find the correct 12" 180 tooth flywheel, I already have the correct (New) clutch assembly.

I hope this helped.

Ring gears are cheep. If the flywheel is ok then it's well worth only replacing it.

so the ring gear is just the same 180 tooth one for both engines,, cool. So that pretty much means I just need a manual starter. Thank for the help.

ok, new issue. P/O said they got broken pieces of starter out of the bell when they messed with it. I now know that it was not starter pieces, but clutch pieces. Clutch was working fine, but I just got it all apart and found that all but one spring are missing, and that one is broken. Clutch looks great, but is now junk. What causes that? Is the PP still good? Can I get a new clutch disc or am I stuck buying a whole set?

I got a new ring gear, that's no issue. I'm gonna try to have the flywheel turned if I can find somewhere to do it. Guess I'll be buying a complete clutch too.
