Manual hubs restoration.

The set of lockers on my truck are in bad shape. The outer chrome piece is very pitted and the chrome is flaking off. The inner plastic piece is faded to the point that it is almost white. Can I buy the outer ring and **** by themselves? I cant find it in LMC or ebay. If not, what would be the best method to bring color back to the ****? Thanks

Dennis Carpenter sells the red plastic "Ford" actuating *****.

Afaik the "Free-Lock" chrome retaining rings are not available, other than the occasional appearance on ebay.

Thanks, What would be an appropriate paint to put on the rings then? Chrome or powder coating are both out of the question right now, but eastwood has so many different coatings I dont know which one would be the best in terms of durability.

Hey man, cool trick for ya if your turn dials are faded. Buy some RIT fabric dye (red). Bring a pot of water to a boil and then add some of the RIT dye (eye ball it for the right color--just a couple of table spoons). Then put your dials in. Boil them for around ten minutes or until you see the color you want. Then leave the dials in the pot but drain the hot water out and run cold water in. Let sit for 5-10 minutes. Use a nylon brush to brush the dials to clean and polish. They'll look awesome...you will be amazed with the results!! Don't use to much dye, the dials will take a dark color fast...

It's a 1978 Ford F250 Dana 60 front axle.

Thanks

For which axle? I couldn't find any on their site (that doesn't mean they aren't there).

I found this set of used oem chrome retaining rings for 40 bucks, but they're probably in no better condition than yours...

QU40549 Dana 60 Lockout Hub Cap

Ask ND or Mike O for the part number, they can run a check to see if any Ford dealer and/or obsolete parts dealer has a a set of NOS rings sitting on the shelf somewhere.

They're listed under "actuating ****" but DC has none for the 78/79 D60.

I posted that info before the OP identified his axle.

1972RedNeck, if you have a spare set you want to sell and they're in better condition than mine i may be interested in buying them.

The chrome on mine is in great shape, no peeling, no pitting, no road rash...BUT, most all the bolt holes are split from over tightening.

If you decide to paint the chrome, I've had good results with Rustoleum chrome spray paint. Clean/degrease with strong solvent, sand with 150, prime with etching primer - Rustoleum has a good etching primer sold at Menards - and paint.

I would get skinned if I sold some. My dad and brother have been begging me for a set. Theirs are just like the one you described.
