Key & Cylinder Lock

Not the usual problem that you might think.

I pull into parking space and turn truck off. Key won't come out. Its a well used key so I figured that it was getting old and the cylinder was too.

So I go to Autozone and they have one replacement ignition cylinder lock in stock.

Go home, takes about 10 minutes to replace it.

Key will still not come out. You can start truck just fine and put it into the last position before the release/remove position and then it just stops. Obviously won't go into ACC position either.

Thoughts?

How does your key look? When keys get worn lock cylinders dont like to accept them as readily. Perhaps yours is just not letting go.

This is the 2003 F350.

The new cylinder lock and key are doing the exact same thing.

That sounds like what normally happens if you try to take the key out while the truck is still in gear. Assuming it is an automatic, I would concentrate on the shift lever. Sounds like it may not be releasing the key when put in park.

Also try pushing the lever further towards "park" while you try turn the lock cylinder to the "release" position.

Hmm good idea. It could be that the little indicator is not moving close enough to park. Is the red line far off?

Does the shifter feel loose or sloppy?

I've tried the shifter a little but honestly not much. It does not feel sloppy but will concentrate my efforts there. The steering wheel never locks either. Will update tomorrow.

Starting to sound like something mechanical is messed up in the ignition switch linkage. Sorry, I haven't had the pleasure of taking one apart before...

I fixed the problem but need to make it permanent with a part.

The nylon/poly sleeve between the shift u-holder and column assembly sheared off one end. There is still most of the sleeve intact.

However, the part that was sheared off was interfering with the shifter and the key release. I simply pulled out the sheared parts and its fine.

If you want to see the part...Pictures by braeburnucs - Photobucket

Now, to find that 4wd vacuum leak next......

Thanks.

My problem exactly. I've replaced the key lock assembly and it turns clockwise and starts/stops the engine just fine, but upon careful inspection it's clear that it's not returning to the original position that allows the key to be removed.....or to continue counter clockwise to the ACC position. Does this sound like a linkage problem?

Thank in advance for any advice.

After years and miles and the dust the
lub that is in there tends to get a bit gritty.
Take a swab and clean it out and re-lub
with some white grease. Mine was really
stiff and almost doing the same as yours.
I guess I got lucky and did not snap that part.
