E4OD compatability

I own a 1996 f-150 with an e4od that needs replacement. Can I install an e4od from a 1997? The only difference I can tell is the shifter arm and position sensor. Would I need to change anything else? Thanks for any help.

As long as the '97 is for a small block motor(4.9,5.0,5.8) and not from an OBS big block(7.3,7.5) or newer modular(4.6,5.4) truck. Incidentally have you done full diagnostics on your truck to ensure it's not just a sensor issue, for example hard/late shifting or intermittent neutrals is not a trans problem so the issue won't be cured with a replacement. Just saying because it's a lot of work only to find out the PSOM or TPS is the real problem.

Thanks Conanski,
I'm not sure which engine the April 97 tran build date was on, just from an f150. The bolt pattern is the same as mine with a 5.0. Is there any other way to tell before installing? BTW reputable tran guy said the OD planetary went out.

That's from a first generation 4.6 powetrain then which apparently uses the same trans bolt pattern as the pushrod windsors, but I thought all those trucks had 4R70W trasnmissions. I could be wrong there but that's something you're gonna have to check out, these are both electronically controlled gearboxes but they're not directly swappable, there are wiring and control(computer) differences. IDing the trans is pretty easy, the 4R70w oilpan is shaped just like an AOD while the E4OD oilpan is totally different, see below...

if its from a 97 f150 with the right bellhousing it came from a 4.2 l v6 and is a 4r70
only the 91-92 4.6 in crownvics & lincolns had the windsor bellhousing
