Common for the connector for the Crank sensor to corrode, pull it apart, clean and reconnect using dielectric grease....

Have you tried it on test fuel??...... Philip

Did you test your fuel pressure before replacing the fuel pump? Do you have spark? Was the starter motor not turning?

If you have good fuel pressure and the engine turns but you have no spark then I would suspect the crankcase sensor connection (as suggested) or the battery. I had a '97 that had no spark and cleaned the crankcase position sensor connections (on front of the enigne, at the bottom on the OHV engine) and replaced the battery and the problem has not returned. I checked the battery with a hydrometer and two of the cells were weak. I suspect my problem was probably the battery in this case.

I was told this was mostly plastic and would have to be replaced to the tune of 98 dollars. Where can I find a diagram to illuminate this part?

Look on the passenger side of the engine block, Loom runs down the front and terminates at the main crank.... Philip

The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is NOT the same as the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor, nor are they located in the same location. The CMP sensor will not typically cause a no start condition by itself, the CKP sensor will.

CKP

I just went through the same thing with my '97 4.0 pushrod. I changed fuel pump, filter, tested coil pack since it would just decide not to start when it felt like it, then anywhere from 1-4 days it would start again. Anyways front, bottom of engine will be by your pulley and have 2 or 3 wires coming off of it and the connector holding it on is a thin wire in which you push in on to pull off check to see if corroded. The last time I had this issue it was towed home, I got mad and decided to see what everyone suggested and took it off brushed the connection popped back together and started right up.
