A/C cycling on any off

WHen I turn the A/C on the compressor kicks on then shuts back off then cycles this way but never gets cool. Any ideas? The a/c didn't work when I got the truck so i added coolant it started the compressor but it won't stay running. Could it be the pressure switch?

I agree with So. Bronco. It sounds low still. What is the ambient temp of the place your adding refrigerant and what does the pressure read on the can guage while the compressor is running and not?

amb temp was around 85

the guage I was using has green blue yellow and red. Green is low, Blue is full, Yellow is alert, red is warning. The needle was fluctuating from the bottom of blue when on and bottom of yellow when off.

If it was that warm out then I'd say you need more refrigerant. The warmer the ambient temp the higher the low side(that's all you get with a backyard mechanics kit)pressure will read because refrigerant expands in higher temps.
So if you were on the bottom of full with it running at 85* then it might be in the middle of low when it's 60*
How much does the truck take in total .OZ (it should say on the sticker under the hood marked 134-A) and how much have you put in it so far?

Add another can of R134 with oil charge. With no idea of how much oil leaked out of the system, better add some in. I seen others do that with just freon and no oil charge. Few hours later the compressor locked up with no lube!

How about a total evacuation, screen/dryer change and a recharge? I realise it's $$ but will remove all doubt with the system...

Explorer? It will be on the accumulator. Usually up near the fire wall under the hood on the passengers side.
