Steering Wheel position sensor

What failed? I wouldn't expect these parts to fail. Steering wheel position sensor would be used for the stability control system as well as the off-road display on the dash.
The critical part of this repair is making sure you keep your wheels straight and the clockspring "on center." I did one of these on another vehicle and didn't have things lined up. First hard left I took ripped the wiring out of the clockspring; the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

My stability control light comes on. Every time I shut down, it seems to clear, But with in a mile down the road, The Stability Control icon illuminates. The error code say the Steering Wheel Position Sensor is bad.
Dealer was quoting about $150 in parts and the rest in labor. I'm finding the sensor at a SLC dealer for $39.28, and Autonation online for $25 plus shipping. I'm sure the steering wheel bolt is a few bucks that they say to discard the original and replace with a new one. So I'm not sure what other parts the dealer could possible be quoting to come up with a $150 parts quote.
I don't know what has caused it. They just replaced one caliper, two rotors, and the pads on the front and this light came on that afternoon after I picked up the truck. Maybe something shorted it out while they worked on the brakes or maybe it's just murphy's law and it had nothing to do with the brake job. Can't possibly point a finger and say they caused it. But the timing makes you wonder.

That's very odd. The brakes are connected to the stability control system, but only in the sense that the ABS sensors read wheel speed and the brakes themselves apply at the command of the ABS computer in order to correct a stability situation.
In my opinion, the steering wheel position sensor is one of those parts that should never fail and last the lifetime of the vehicle. Anything is possible, but that just seems unlucky.
Stability control may need to be calibrated after replacing the sensor.

Anyone have an update
I replaced my clockspring and the piece behind it would not snap in place like the original did, like it didn't fit as in they maybe upgraded the clockspring, but I lined everything up. My Service Advanctrac light started coming on right before the swap and my steering radio controls and airbag light was on. The clockspring swap fixed the steering controls and airbag lights now off but the Advanctrac light still comes on. PITA so any help is appreciated.
Thanks
