7.3L use too much fuel at idle.

2000 F350 7.3L

Got tired of try firgure why it use so much fuel in short hwy and long city drive. I went and bought Scan Gauge E. That was best $95 buck I spend ever.

On Cold start idle. It current use around 3.8-4.0 GPH but Drive like 400 feets then it go down to 1.70-1.98 GPH.

Interested when drive like city with no highway. 30 miles it use 1.09 GPH until you REV once it drop to .97.

After that 6 hours in 30oF then went home on 30 miles of highway it seem to use 2.80-3.98 GPH at 55-60 mph with mpg average 16. When park at home it currently use .72-.74GPH

Why didn't it do that in city? Is there sensor that control engine management and adjust fuel flow? I can't image how much $$ in Fuel go drain cause this 7.3L isn't run right. Everybody say it PERFECT but not me.

I'm definitely not an expert and haven't even looked very deeply into PW and timing at given temperatures, but I do know that Oil temperature, Air temperature and barometric pressure all play a role in fuel and timing.

PW? Not sure what it standing but heard those couple times.

Look like I need made grill cover it forever to warm up after new Thermostat and flush radiator.

Does bad MAP affect these? Would 1995-1997 F250 powerstroke MAP fit?

PW=Pulse Width the amount of time the injector is energized to open I believe. If a MAP sensor was reading high psi it would in theory be adding more fuel. I do not know about earlier sensors though, sorry going a little out of my first hand knowledge...

Thank it pulse width

Map I see at idle it was 14.6 or 16 psi but wasn't sure.

I been up last night try find exact answer. There are no answer to my question.

Alot people report .5-.6 GPH at 120oF but mine would be 1.00-1.09. Which is EXCESS Fuel consume.

With summer come at $5.00 I would like FIX THIS ISSUE. If it been fix I could gotten 20 mpg by now instead 18.

At idle, your fuel consumption should be about 0.33 to 0.40 GPH (gallons per hour) and at high idle it should be about 0.66 GPH.

nlemerise

That what scan Gauge saying. Must be bad sensor somewhere or injector? Only it show #8 injector that all it is.

There is no fuel flow meter on the truck. There are plenty of sensors to derive the estimated flow from (FIPW, ICP, ICP DC, Fuel Level, etc...) - but no actual flow meter. Even the great and powerful AE can miss this number, so I wouldn't put a lot of stock in those alleged fuel rates.
