The Ford AOD: Good or Bad?

My only question is just how great is the AOD tranny? I've heard the 302/AOD setup in a Bronco is NOT the way to go(most 4th gen. Bronco owners seem to favor the 351/E4OD). What do you folks think? Does it depend on my driving habits? Off often I take it off-road? I've heard the AOD doesen't perform so well off-road...

From what I've heard they can be built to be pretty tuff. The biggest thing with them is the TV cable adjustment. If you don't get this setting right and maintain it there, you can burn up an AOD very quickly. I think some of them that suffered this fate were due to wear and tear on the linkage at the throttle body. I believe there are aftermarket products out there now to prevent this from happening. The AOD was replaced by the AODE and eventualy the 4R70W. Thats all the info I can ive you, i'm sure someone with more advanced knowledge will chime in with details.
