Fuel tank seal

I have an issue with the gasket that goes between the hanger and the fuel tank. It is almost like it is just a little bit too small. I cannot get the seal to seat all the way into the groove.

I have had the tank out of my truck 4 or 5 times and it is frustrating when I go to fill it up and it leaks all over again. I have the 18 gal steel center tank. Is there a certain brand I need to get to make sure the seal is the right size? The one that is on there came with the airtex fuel pump. Airtex pumps suck by the way. And not in the good way.

When you say the hanger and the fuel tank.. I am picturing the rubber between the tank and the strap. Then I dont understand how you go into the fuel pump...

Clarify please? Ive had my tank out a bunch as well.

Maybe he's thinkin' about the fuel pump/sending unit and the seal underneath that as it contacts the tank. Seems to me that the filler hose or vent tube mite be the issue.

How much is a "little bit too small"? If only need little extra put the O ring in a pan of hot water forcing it to expand a little bit. Put it in place and lock it down, it won't contract again once in place if you only need a little bit to start with allow it fit into its groove.

I more often see just the opposite problem with them, O ring is just a little bit to big fit into groove in tank. Just enough make it a complete pain in the rear!

I'm always working by myself doing this and its a total pain in the *** to get the filler house back on the tank by yourself. I haven't been pulling the tank all the way out because of this.

I always do it by myself also. A jack with a piece of wood on it to support the tank or a transmission jack help wonderfully to free up your hands.

As for the filler neck.... it is a pain. I found it easier to unbolt the tube from the fuel door area. You can connect the hose to the tank and just throw the tube over the frame and connect it again. I used to have a lot of problems getting the hoses (internal and outside) on the tank without kinking.
