460 Block question(s)

Im looking to rebuild a 460 but i want it to be a MAF motor. is that possible for the 460? And if i get a bare block will i be able to make it a MAF 460 or will i have to buy one for that?

The late 460's from California (1996 & 1997 I believe) were MAF from the factory. If you can find the ECU & wiring harness from a California MAF truck along with the few extra sensors (MAF sensor, second O2 sensor, etc), you should be able to take any EFI 460 engine and make it run MAF as a factory-like engine.

Best bet would be to visit a junkyard in California. Since I'm located in Iowa, I've pretty much passed over the idea of finding a California 460 system. If you're willing to stay with MAP but do your own tuning, you could look at doing a Mustang EEC IV swap and something like the Quarterhorse tuner to make your tuning adjustments. When I build my new motor, I'm going to probably use a MegaSquirt system to run my engine.

BTW in the basic question, the block isn't your issue since they used teh same block from late 79 thru end of production.

Heads are a different thing. If your going stock your going to need the later FI heads so if you can find a california truck grab the entire top end.

As far as the MAF, the CA 460 uses the same MAF as a 95-96 Continental 4.6L DOHC. Finding an MAF 460 air filter and inlet hoses could be a bigger problem. I'm still looking for the hoses, I built the air filter top.

I'm pretty sure i could build both things for the air filter and hoses because i would mod it all for aftermarket things but because of budget issues i am going to just rebuild my 351W until i have sufficient funds.

Regarding the 96 & 97 CA 460's having MAF would that apply to over 8,500 lb GVW trucks (250HD and above) because I thought Ford carried the OBD1's over into the higher load trucks until the shape change.
