big tires on stock rims

I have an 09 4wd super duty with stock 265/70/17 tires. I want to go to a 305/70/17( E range of course) should this be a problem? the folks at tire kingdom and discount tire says although the tires will fit and not rub they will balloon out and only wear in the center. I have a friend that put 315/70/17 on his dodge and they look dam good, but he had to get the leveling blocks. I also am curious if there would be any problem pulling a 10,000 lbs tag along camper with this truck and the 305's? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Depends on your rim width. I'm running 315's on the truck in my sig with stock rims no rubbing. The tire size and towing wont be an issue.

the tire shop is doing you right

your rims are too narrow for a 315 width tire. they'll fit, but the narrow width will pull the outer edges of the tire upwards. hence why they said you'll wear in the centers mostly.

i have 305 buckshot mudders on my stock 7" wheels, have not had any uneven wear.. also have pulled my camper over a thousand miles on several occasions in the summer heat and never had any trouble with mine.. the are 8 ply tires with 50psi in them.. they seem to ride a little softer than the 10 ply tires

my local firestone guy (whom i trust and respect) urged me not to install lt325 65r18 detination a/t's on my 8" rims...recommended for 9-12" rims. i think the extra 2 inches overall diameter that i would get over my 275 70 18s would be worth a little extra wear but of course i would have to acknowledge the warranty would be voided since i need the E tow rating and do heavy miles, i'm torn...

i think that size tire is good for 8 - 9.5 rim width. ive got a 315/75 16 on a stock 8" wide wheel for my spare and it seems to fit ok.

Generally, a competent tire shop will not install anything wider than a 285 on our stock rims.

You could go with something like a 285/75/17. This would be pretty close the same height as the 305/70/17 but not quite as wide.
