1987 F-250 Lariat Issues

I'm having issues with the truck I just bought. One is stalling. 90% of the time, I cant come to a complete idoling stop without it stalling. Second is, today, I popped the hood and tried to check the oil and the entire metal tube that connects to the oil pan just came off. I'm not sure if it was welded and it just corroded or if it was some type of compression fitting that came loose. Some things I have done to the truck already are, replaced the water pump, fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, radiator hoses, and a basic service (oil change and other fluids, and filters). I guess I'm just looking for any suggestions from someone that knows more about these trucks then I do (which isn't much).

If it is over 8500 gvw then you have a carburetor, no computer, and the dipstick tube fits into the side of the oil pan with a compression fitting.

Thats correct, its carbureted. And yes, it fits into the side of the oil pan. So that answers the question about that. Thanks much. Any advise as to the stalling?

Are you saying that if the truck is idling and you step on the brakes to stop the engine dies?
How does it idle when it's not moving?
Is the idle steady at 650 rpm in gear?

Do you have any way to check the level of intake vacuum?
Do you have a timing light?
Does this happen always, or only when the truck is warmed up?

I have no way to check anything, I only know the basics about my vehicles. When Something goes wrong, I have take it somewhere. I currently have no money for that so Im trying to figure it out myself. Basically, Its hard to keep the motor running in general. While I have my foot on the gas, its fine. But as soon as it comes down close to idol, most of the time it stalls. It also back fires sometimes. I have adjusted the idol up and down, I also took it too the shop I use and they checked to make sure there was nothing in the idol jets.

Ive had the thought that its the carb. Ive run two bottles of carb cleaner through the gas though and it made no difference.

It backfired through the carb?
Is the exhaust very rich and sooty?

I had thought you might have a leak at the bottom of the carb (EGR spacer)
But if it is running rich, popping on decelleration and dying at idle it is more likely a blown PowerValve in the carburetor.

Have you used a can of Gumout cleaner on the carb, spraying it to remove any and all varnish from the inside?

Aard is on the right track, I believe. The last carb I worked on I ended up taking it to a shop to have it rebuilt. Prior to that, it had been at least 20 years...

Thanks guys. Youve been helpful. I think I'm just going to take the carb off and have it rebuilt. I did however find a guy that may be willing to buy it if I fix the oil pan problem. With only 68k original miles and one owner, I'd prefer to hold on to it, but I just dont have the time to put into it. Thanks again.
