EGR Cooler questions

Just want to know if you had an 03 6.0ex that needs a new egr cooler what would you do?

Option 1: buy a new cooler

Option 2: buy the delete kit

if you did the delete kit, who would you get it from?

Replaced my 04 square unit with one from BulletProofDiesel - Darn-Near Bullet Proof Diesel Products for your 6.0 The 03's rarely have issues from what I've read. BPD also has a delete kit.

Thumbs up Delete it

Delete the EGR cooler. Plan on 10-12 hours to do it yourself. Might as well plan on a coolant flush while in there too. River City Diesel has theirs on sale last I looked.

Would not delete but would upgrade to a BPD or Sinister EGR cooler and replace the oil cooler while I was in there. I would also flush the coolant system prior.

You should also get a ODBII gauge (SGII or similar) and monitor
your ECT and EOT. It's possible your oil cooler is clogged and that
is why your EGR cooler is bad.

Most would say if you are replacing the EGR cooler you should
also replace the OIL cooler.

If you must delete the cooler, make sure the up-pipes are kosher on the kit as that seems to be a failing point especially on the "home made" kits, but even on some of the big boy kits they can have bad weld points on them.

I wouldn't delete the EGR system for a couple of reason:

1. From my experience the EGR system isn't the big bad culprit that a lot of people make it out to be, but because it's an emissions system part most people are willing to automatically damn it.

and

2. It is flat out illegal to do so even if you don't have emission testing were you are at. As long as you are in the good US of A it is illegal. That makes it harder to sell it later on down the line or you run the risk of getting caught if you use the truck to travel with.

You just have to be careful how you weld in there. The metal doesn't take much to crack. Exhaust leak causes havoc with driving.

no welding at all with the BPD EGR deleate they should have done it and pressure tested it to and looks stock

But a regular EGR cooler from BPD would be great to and would be cheaper than getting a programmer and stuff

I just bought a 2005 turbo dually F-350. First day off the lot warning light goes on (wrench symbol) EGR and cooler replaced $3K. Today I find out that the turbo needs to be fixed which is causing the turbo tube to come off and I lose total power. This fix is 1.2K at the Ford Dealer. I have had this truck for two payments and it has been in the shop 7 times. What a lemon I must have. If I had to do it all over again I would have bought a used duramax or a brand new Ford-if I had 60K! Good luck and clean the turbo if you ever have to have it off (EGR and Oil Cooler). Repalce all the hose clamps on the turbo tube too-they cost $22 a piece!

Any used truck can be a problem, yes even a Duramax .......

If you allowed them to charge you $3k ONE DAY after driving off of the lot, then you have ONLY yourself to blame. There are warranties and BBB practices that protect the buyer - but only if they choose to take advantage of them.

Furthermore, I don't think I would keep a vehicle that required that big of a repair job immediately after I bought it. There are PLENTY of RELIABLE used 6.0L's out there - no need to get stuck w/ a bad one.

The dealer took care of the first 3K-did a horrible job of repairing-it wasn't a Ford Dealer-AZ lemon law took care of that. I did get an ext warranty thru good same. They are picking up the tab after my $500 ded on the current fix-great investment, only made one payment to Good Sams and have gotten my money back 6 fold. Had the policy only 5 days. I am sure I will be using it again-hopefully not too soon. Yes I am an idoit-should have done more research, but this could have happened anyway. I was just kicking tires when I bought the truck.

Keep in mind.. there is often a "reason" the previous owner decided to
sell when they did.
