3:44 A.M. and a thrown belt

So here I sit in my truck on the side of an interstate with a thrown belt hahahaha. Me and my girl were driving back from atlanta and now I'm kinda screwed. How hard exactly is it to put on a new belt on the side of the road? I got my toolbox and **** so I have tools...and I'm gonna get a ride to a parts store tmorrow. Any advise?

Easy in the day, slightly harder at night! Just follow the diagram on the lip above your grill.

One's with A/C, one's without A/C

One can do it, but two is recommended. all you need is a rachet, with the correct socket, and done! Or breaker bar would work too!

Best of luck to you! Hope you make it out of there.

Kind of simple, you only need one wrench as a lever to release the tension on the idler, I think that its 5/8 or so

It's a 15 mm I usually carry the old belt with for a spare doesn't look like your gonna beable to just make sure no ribs are overhanging pulleys

The two times I've worked on a vehicle because it threw a belt the problem was the idler pulley. Once it froze (the wife didn't tell me the thing had been noisey for a couple of days) and the other time the pulley would just lean over far enough that the belt kept coming off (ruined two belt before I figured out the problem).

If it's just a thrown belt can't you just put it back on? If it's broke thats another story.

It's quite easy, i've done it both at day and night, as you have been told already, all you need is a socket wrench (even simply a wrench) and a 15mm socket. Slide the belt in position, except for the tensioner pulley, then use the wrench counter clock wise to release the tension and be able to slide the belt under the pulley and you should be good to go. Of course, if the engine threw the belt you need to find out the cause, if it was a very old belt it probably was just ready to go, if not, check those pulleys.

Big, he probably rolled for a little while without the belt, at night, hard to find it that way, and sometimes the engine itself shreds the belt once it comes off.

found out what happened..its been making a noise that sounded like i had sand or something in my pulleys for a while but i figured it was just dirty..well...fixed it today..the tension pulley bearing froze up and the wheel burned off and part of it melted to the pulley base..

replaced it today and threw on a new serp belt..engine sounds new!!!!!

haha,,well.....it was more of a me pissed off because i was tired and cranky from driving this late, and her not even knowing how to change a tire or remember how to check the oil, throwing out all these ideas that ended with, "well cant you just drive it the rest of the way?" or "lets just drive to a store and spray the engine with water to cool it down"

but yeah i drove about a mile and a half to a good pull-over placve in plenty of light and shade (with the sun at the right spot)

Dude you have to teach your girl about cars. My girlfriend is diagnosing problems on her girlfriends cars now! Its even funnier because she knows more about engines than most of their boyfriends
