I would like your help choosing a camshaft

my 460 has relatively no low end torque. It will rev to the moon but there exists no torque right off idle. Sometimes with the truck in the mud, and high side of the t-case (with 44s and 5.13s) it won't even spin the tires over in the mud. However if I get the revs up first it has no issue whatsover pulling the tires.
there is no issue when the truck is locked in low, it pulls off idle then.

All i know about the motor is it has dove c heads (which I know aren't really a big deal) a torker intake, and a 670 truck avenger carb.

I have another truck with a bone stock 460, and the difference in low end power is unreal. i can't really effectively pull a trailer with two fourwheelers with my big truck.

my guess is the cam is maybe sized wrong, so Im thinking about going with a comp extreme 4x4 cam, and getting another intake manifold.

What do ya'll think.

p.s. I can't set the timing with a light because it seems that maybe the harmonic balancer has slipped.

I myself prefer the Comp Cams,......but if it was me, I would call up their tech line and see what they recommend. A custom grind might be the way to go,.....for not that much more.

Would this be a suitable cause for alarm?

I think this maybe the problem...

As long as it's apart I'd change it but it will not cause any problems being a little loose like that.

Replace the balancer before it separates entirely and takes out something else.
Especially if you're "revving it to the moon" in the mud.
You've got it off now. At least then you can time the thing.
What do you know about the distributor?
Has it been re-curved?
Is it using vacuum advance, or is it centrifugal only, or is it locked out like a drag motor?

You could try advancing the cam and see what that does for your bottom end.
IF you're sure to check piston->valve clearance before firing it back up.

...Tough situation, not knowing anything about the engine's internals.

It is slack, but as Mark said it's not the root of your problem.

For under $50 get a nice Cloyes adjustable True Double Roller and replace the balancer no matter what the cost.

Talk to Scott at RHP about your distributor.
