Hard start when motor is hot

My F250 351W start fine when cold. When hot it turns over but its like the battery is dead. The battery is only 3 years old. The charging circut is fine. I had the starter tested and it failed, so I replaced it. It still has the hot start problem even with new starter. The ground are all good. This problem arose after I replaced the head gaskets? Any suggestions?

You don't possible have the timing too high do you. That can make an engine harder to turn over and is the only thing I could think of that would change starting characteristics with replacing head gaskets

Do you have headers? Sometimes proximity to the exhaust heats up the starter body, and causes it to crank slow. If so, a heat shield between the two will make a noticeable difference. Just a thought.

I had the same thing happen on my F350 with a 460 and it turned out the new starter was bad. I took it back to NAPA and they ran a test the starter pulled to many amps. With the new and improved one it starts fine.
Even new starters can be bad. Good Luck.

Try this test;
Next time you try to start it when the motor is hot and it dosen't want to crank over, release the key (stop cranking)
pump the gas peddle to the floor 3-4 times to dilute the intake charge
try starting it again
If it spins over at normal speed before starting (once the flooding clears out)
This indicates your timing is too far advanced
If it still cranks hard after the 3-4 peddle pumps this indicates;
low voltage to starter (positive cables or negative ground)
or
bad starter
or
heat soaked starter

If you go with a later model, say 92-96 starter, it will help alot with that. It is a bolt in and all you have to do is move a couple of wires around as the later starter has a solenoid on it. I just use one solenoid to activate the other one, like a relay.

My truck is hard starting when hot if you don't follow the starting proceedure to a "T".

The owners manual states to step on the throttle 1/4 of the way down to start when hot. If I remember to do this it fires right up.

It depends on the symptoms, and what the truck is doing...

Very old thread, and the person who started hasn't been on here since August 2005. I would start a new thread if you have a problem.
