Help, when my truck is cold it starts fine, but when it warms up (10-15 minutes) the starter drags like the battery is very low. I replaced the starter and wrapped it, tried a different battery, and checked the battery connections. Nothing helped; any ideas?
I've got the same problem. New battery, and she fires up right away when cold, even after sitting for a week without moving. When hot, though, it barely turns over.

I replaced the groud stap from battery to frame and it did not help so I added a ground from the engine block to the frame and this improved the starting. Although some times it still takes 2 or 3 tries to get it going.
sounds like the starter is getting to hot. Are you running headers, they will heat the starter because they are closer then the stock exaust. Also how close it the exaust pipe to the starter. I had the same problem, The muffler shop bend the pipe wrong and got it too close to the starter. I'm also running a set of 406 exaust manifolds that offer much better flow than stock. try putting a starter heat shield on the starter and see if that helps.
common problem it seems, as i had the same with a 69 F100 with a six banger. Went through all the same things, battery, connections, etc... But the problem turned out to be my fan belt was loose and the when the motor got hot the valves got stuck. Not hot enough for the gauge to get high, but once I tightned the belt, the problem went away. Worth a try anyway. Maybe new belts, too?
Spark advance, vacume advance whatever you like to call it , I had a 78 supercab with a 400 , I did all the things you guys talked about , it turned out that the spark advance was not working , when its running and you set the timing ( by ear )
to make it run good you are advancing it too far , then when you shut it off it wont turn over coz the timing is too far advanced,
After I sold it A mechanic told me there are ( magnets i think )
in the distributor that get stuck and then the advance does'nt work,
anyway I would hardly ever drive that truck because of that,
So now you have one more thing to look at, Hope you can getter
goin
mostly I have seen that to be caused by timing too far advanced. or the vacume advace in the distributor is frozen in an advanced state (you know..rust) Cold it starts fine but when hot it will start hard. Timeing needs to be retarded. Are you running a stock ignition box. Check to see if it is overheating, or the potting(black gue on the back of the box) is melted. If so get a new one. They are less than $20.
it seems that we have all had the same problem, i got mine to go away pretty easily though,
my engine doesnt leak any fluids so the starter was already clean so i replaced it as it was stock, replaced all battery wires with heavier 2 gauge wires and got a new battery and solenoid, then had a tuneup and it was good to go
